New Years Day 5K

Posted on January 1, 2012 by runinboise

Happy 2012! Yikes, I will be writing 2011 on my checks and papers at work for another 6 months!

Didn’t drink nearly as much as I wanted to last night, because, you know I am an alcoholic. But after some Mongolian BBQ, hot tub and lots of water with lemon, 2 chocolate martinis and a glass of bubbly brought in my new year. A 12:30-something bedtime and an 8am alarm had me dreading getting up in the cold and getting ready for this race.

It was 30 degrees outside.

I felt full and bloated from all the Mongolian dinner and feel the need to do some detoxing this week. Breakfast was fueled with some strong coffee and leftovers. I was ready to go.

The race started at the Ram, which is somewhere I have memories of. I’ll tell you about them sometime. The parking lot was full, but everyone was inside the restaurant, which actually seemed like a cluttered cluster F. You could use the potties inside, register late, and get in the loooong line for your chip. I spent about 7 minutes in the chip line. The BF and I went outside where I surprisingly met some people I went to high school with. Dave, a dude who I have been in love with since high school, was looking like his sexy hipster self, and Christy, who was there supporting her ultra-runner hubby and his friend doing his first 5K. Did I get pics with anyone besides myself? Nope.

I not only had the BF as photographer, I also had Christy at 3 different race course spots being the ultra supportive wifey and cheerleader.

There was about 470 people for this race. They said 100 more then last year. Which I guess is cool. We started a little after 10am due to the long inside pottie and chip lines. This was a strange greenbelt course, but it was nice.

I felt slow, bloated and crampy. My calves were cramping up during the first mile, and I felt the need to get rid of my Mongolian, if you know what I mean. The whole 3 miles I was distracted by either my gut or my calves. Girlfriend here is not in the best running condition after this holiday season.

I would have liked to have beaten my previous 5K times of 35 minutes, but didn’t do that with the last week being like a total glutton.

My official results were 36:37.7 – 256 overall/ 122 female/ 10 division

My friend Christy is standing at the blue truck with the pink hat.

Inside after the race, there was a buffet of hot soup – chicken noodle and like cheese broccoli or something, bagels, melons and bananas, bottled water and sparkling cider. There were some spectators with runners bibs who were fooding also, but what do I care. I needed something warm to drink.

This race was fun to do, but getting out the door, I had less enthusiasm then any of my other 2011 races. I may be starting 2012 as bloated, fat, slogger,  but I do not plan to end the year this way.

Did you party too hardy last night? Did you do a New Years Day run?
